Stockholmia 2019

STOCKHOLMIA 2019 joint FIPSG and PPHSGB meeting  Friday 31st May 2019

The  joint FIPSG and PPHSGB meeting took place during the Stockholmia 2019 exhibition, which was from 29 May to 2 June 2019 in central Stockholm. The exhibition celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Royal Philatelic Society of London.

This meeting took place on Friday 31 May 2019 between 1pm and 4pm, and 22 members and guests participated. We were able to use one of the nice meeting rooms at the exhibition venue and it had all the electronic features that one could ask for. There were three main displays, and one additional display was added at the meeting. Stefan Heijtz opened the meeting and welcomed everybody.

After this Hugh Osborne was first out with "Censor Mail of the Falkland Islands & Dependencies, WWI & WWII" and he showed a nice array of rare censor covers to and from the Falklands together with facts about how the censors were appointed and worked in the Falklands.

This was followed by Steve Allen showing "Heroic Age of Norwegian Polar Exploration". His display was as much about history as postal history and he had a lot of interesting contemporary photographs in his presentation. Steve's knowledge in this field is quite exceptional and he would have been able to entertain us for hours, if we had allowed him!

Before the third main display we were treated to a small show of very interesting pieces of Whaling Mail by Erik Evensen from Norway. These were all very well researched and of highest caliber.

The final display was shown by Stefan Heijtz and it was called "30 years in the Falklands – a personal history 1989-2019". This gave an insight in Stefan's life in the Falklands over the last 30 years, from the first visit in 1989, through the years as Antarctic Postman 1991-92 and 1992-93, to the latest chapter about the Old Post Office at Fox Bay, which started in 2014 and is still going on.

Everybody seemed to enjoy the displays and nobody feel asleep!

At 7pm we all met up again for the joint dinner in the Italian restaurant Primo Ciao Ciao which is in the local area within easy walking distance from the Exhibition. 21 members and guests gathered here and we had an enjoyable and tasty evening with everything from pasta and pizza to meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. After the meal we all walked through the mild summer's night back to our hotels.

Presentations added with thanks to the participants. Text on the joint meeting by Stefan Heijtz.
